Mikhail Lermontov's pioneering psychological novel follows Pechorin, a brilliant, cynical Russian officer stationed in the Caucasus. Told through multiple narrators in non-chronological episodes, the novel reveals a restless, self-destructive man who manipulates everyone around him.
