Mikhail Lermontov's pioneering psychological novel follows Pechorin, a brilliant, cynical Russian officer stationed in the Caucasus. Told through multiple narrators in non-chronological episodes, the novel reveals a restless, self-destructive man who manipulates everyone around him. Published in 1840, it is one of the earliest Russian novels and a foundational work of the psychological tradition that Dostoevsky and Tolstoy would later develop.
